Here is my column for our Christmas Even worship experiences:
Two thousand years ago, God gave His Son to the world. No strings attached. It was love in the purest form. The message of Christmas is that God has come to the world to be with us. Jesus perfectly demonstrated how we can experience an abundant and eternal life. He also perfectly sacrificed Himself so we can experience grace and forgiveness. An example to follow, grace when we fail, and God’s presence always. It’s tough to ask for more.
Almost five years ago, in early 2012, The Water’s Edge officially chartered as church. At our best, WE have spoken and acted like Jesus. When WE have fallen short, God has given us His grace. And God has been with us the entire time. Being present with us is what God is all about.
It has been a great journey so far. WE started as a small group and now have dozens of them all over the place. People sharing the joys and burdens of life together. Growing together. It is who WE are. WE have an incredible and fast-growing children’s ministry with hundreds of kids. Our youth ministry that meets at Beadle Middle School on Wednesday evenings is larger than The Water’s Edge was back in the early days when WE worshipped at Russell Middle School. WE continue developing systems and leaders that will allow God to use The Water’s Edge to serve, care, build, connect, and love today and in the future.
In 2016, WE sent over 100 servants to places like Belize, Uganda, West Virginia, and Minnesota. WE collected 10,000 pounds of food for hungry people here in Omaha. One Sunday, WE cancelled our morning worship experiences and sent hundreds of people to worship God by loving our community with thousands of hours of service. This Christmas, WE provided over 340 children right here in Millard.
WE are now preparing to build our first building and are anticipating breaking ground in March. The new church facility will serve as a beacon of light for generations to come. WE have had some exciting times and our best days are in front of us. If you are new to Water’s Edge, I encourage you to come back in January. WE would love to have you be part of our church family!
Martin Luther King wrote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.” God sent Jesus, the light of the world, to drive out darkness. God continues to do this work through the church. I am blessed to serve and love alongside you, others, and God.
