A Prayer for Pentecost or Anybody Seeking the Holy Spirit

written by Craig Finnestad June 3, 2017

Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday. It is the day the church celebrates God giving us the gift of the Holy Spirit. The following is from the book, Prayers from The Water’s Edge. I wrote this prayer a year ago early one morning in the back of Frederik’s Church in Copenhagen, Denmark. I based the prayer on the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23. I hope it is a blessing to you as you seek more of the Holy Spirit in your life.

Dear God,

You promised to give and keep giving the Holy Spirit to Your people.
Help me be more keenly aware of Your existence in my life.
Immerse me deeper into the waters of renewal.
Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and dwell more and more in my heart.

Form my heart with Your grace.
Lead me to seek You first.
May I find delight in You and all Your creation.
Bless me with joy and love.

Feed my thoughts with purity and holiness.
Give me understanding. Transform my mind.
Teach me Your truth. Free me from sin.
Bless me with faithfulness and self-control.

Make me more empathetic toward the needs of others.
Fill me with courage and compassion.
Give me boldness to speak and act on Your behalf.
Bless me with gentleness, goodness, and kindness.

Comfort me in times of trouble and calm my difficulties with Your care.
Demonstrate that Your grace is enough.
Heal my pain. Use it to make me better and bring glory to You.
Bless me with patience and peace.

Guide me during days of uncertainty.
Help me pray when I don’t know what to say.
Help me experience that Your presence is greater than my fears.
Bless me with a growing friendship with You and dependence on You.

Amen.

On the Future of Methodism

I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power. And this undoubtedly will be the case unless they hold fast both the doctrine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set out. -John Wesley
