When I was a child, my Uncle Chris gave my generation of Finnestads a skammel. It’s Norwegian for footstool. I drew up the plans for a reproduction, a friend of mine did the woodworking, and I primed and painted the stools. Today I gave ten of them to the next generation of Finnestads–my children and nieces and nephews.

The original. Made by Chris Finnestad in 1974.

The top of the skammel. The hole serves as a handle to carry the stool.

I did two coats of primer and two coats of finish. I remember seeing the other colors around various family houses.
